Vieques: How a $5,000 grant transformed an entire community
In 2024, FePA awarded a $5,000 grant to Our Big Fat Caribbean Rescue, Inc., a member organization based in Vieques. The impact was immediate and measurable: 1,400 free spay/neuter procedures, 89 rescues with successful adoptions, 209 community animals served, and 50 families receiving direct support for their pets. This story demonstrates the multiplier effect of FePA’s strategic alliances with member organizations.
Historic agreement with the Department of Education: 2,000 teachers, 227,000 students
FePA signed a six-year agreement with Puerto Rico’s Department of Education to integrate humane education into public schools. In year one, 2,000 teachers were trained through TeachHeart, reaching 227,000 students. The Animal Welfare Institute donated 2,000 books to the program.

FePA’s second Annual Convention brought together more than 100 representatives of the animal welfare sector at the Wyndham Grand Río Mar Resort. Topics included Law 154-2008, compassion fatigue among sector workers, and successful legal reform strategies from other Latin American jurisdictions.
